Unlimited stages and spacing

With Multistage Unlimited technology, you don’t have to compromise your completion design because of operational limitations or cost. You can have any number of stages at the desired spacing needed to optimize production.


Precise frac location

With both Multistage Unlimited casing sleeves and sandjet perforating in cemented casing, you know exactly where the frac initiates and can design reservoir exploitation strategies based on anticipated frac volumes. With plug-and-perf, you can’t be sure which clusters are being effectively treated. With open-hole packers, fracs can initiate at any point between the packers and even at the packers themselves because they can pre-stress the formation; this could result in unwanted inter-zonal communication and make informed well spacing decisions difficult.


Monitor real-time frac-zone pressure

The coiled tubing work string serves as a deadleg during fracturing, so you can monitor pressure response of the formation in real time. This gives you the information you need to control frac growth and avoid screenouts by adjusting sand loading, sand ramp, and pump rates.


High frac rates with much less horsepower

Because Multistage Unlimited pinpoint fracturing delivers frac fluid through a single frac point instead of multiple perforation clusters, high frac rates through the sleeve ports require only about a third of the horsepower needed for plug & perf completions. Technology and design advances have boosted Multistage Unlimited frac rates through the coiled tubing/casing annulus to nearly 80 bbl/min in 5.5-in. casing, far higher “per cluster” than plug-and-perf and more than enough to transport sand (>12 ppg) with slickwater fluid systems.


HSE-friendly: less equipment, fewer personnel at the wellsite

Less pumping horsepower means smaller frac spreads. A typical Multistage Unlimited completion requires three to five frac units, compared with 12 to 14 units needed for plug & perf and ball-sleeve completions. Smaller frac spreads require less rig-up, which in turn requires fewer personnel driving to and working on location, reducing overall exposure to HSE issues. It also means less fuel consumed, less engine exhaust, less noise, less traffic, and a smaller wellsite footprint.


Eco-friendly: uses up to 50% less water

The ability to circulate reduces water and chemicals usage significantly. Leading-edge fluids can be circulated down to the target zone before frac pressure is applied, so less fluid is pumped into the formation, compared to bullheading fluids down the casing. Not having to pump plugs and sleeve-actuating balls also reduces fluid requirements, as does the displacement volume of the coiled tubing string itself. Typical water savings are as high as 20% for a typical Multistage Unlimited annular-frac completion. For low-volume sleeve fracs, where the treatment can be pumped through the coiled tubing, water savings approach 50%. That’s a lot less water to buy, transport, treat, and dispose of.


Quick recovery from screenouts

The circulation path to the frac zone enables quick recovery from screenouts by circulating excess sand out of the well.


No rig-down/rig-up between stages

Unlike plug-and-perf, Multistage Unlimited completion operations are streamlined and continuous, with no need to shut down the operation between stages. It takes only a few minutes to release the frac plug, move to the next sleeve, reset it, and shift the sleeve open or begin sand-jet perforating.


Add stages in blank casing, on the fly

On Multistage Unlimited casing sleeve completions, sand-jet perforating can be used to add stages on the fly, without tripping out of the hole. Perforations can be cut through the casing and cement in about 8 minutes.


Unrestricted, production-ready wellbore with no drillouts

When the last stage is completed and the resettable frac plug is pulled from hole, the well is ready to produce. No need to drill out plugs or ball seats. The bore is fully open, with no restrictions to impede further completion or intervention operations.
